Myrtle Long Haldeman, a retired teacher, grew up on a farm in Hagerstown, Maryland. Her grandfather's brother was David Long (1820-1897), the father of Cassie. A influential minister with 12 children, Long once attended a slave sale, purchased all the slaves, and set them free. He preached the last sermon before the Battle of Antietam in the Mumma church near the battlefield.
